Before the Antietam Campaign: A farmer and married father of (at least) 5 children from Union County, Georgia, he was appointed Major of the Regiment on 16 August 1862, having been Captain, Company B, of the 23rd since its organization 31 August 1861. In the Antietam Campaign: Although wounded at South Mountain on 14 September, he was still with the regiment, and assumed command on the 17th in relief of Lt Colonel Best. The remainder of the War: He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel to rank from 17 September 1862, and promoted to full Colonel on 15 December 1863. He resigned from service on 13 August 1864.
