Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 20 year old farmer on his parent's place at Summerville (now Lillington) in Harnett County, NC. He enlisted at Carthage in Moore County on 7 March 1862 as a Private in Company D, 48th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded by a gunshot in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was briefly in CS General Hospital #10 in Richmond, VA on 7 October 1862, then furloughed home. He died of wounds in the Pettigrew General Hospital in Raleigh, NC on 27 October 1862. His father (Archibald) Alexander filed for his final pay in February 1863.
