Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an 18 year old farmer living with his widowed mother Mary and 4 siblings at Salem in Forsyth County, NC. He served in Company D, 21st NC Infantry in 1861. He was a 19 year old student when he was elected 1st Lieutenant, Company K, 48th Infantry on 12 March 1862. He was promoted to Captain on 3 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the right thigh and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 27 September 1862 in a Federal field hospital on or near the battlefield.
