Before the Antietam Campaign:
Served in Company D, 21st NC Infantry in 1861 at age 18. Elected 1st Lieutenant, Company K, 48th Infantry on 12 March 1862. Promoted Captain on 3 July 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded - in the right thigh - and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
Died of wounds 27 September 1862 in a Federal hospital at Sharpsburg, MD.
