Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enrolled as 2d Lieutenant, Company E, 27th Georgia Infantry on 9 August 1861, and was elected Captain 20 December 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was Captain, Company E, and succeeded to command when Lt Colonel Zachry was wounded on 17 September.

The remainder of the War:
He was admitted to Pettigrew General Hospital #13, at Raleigh, N. C. in 1864, and returned to duty 21 May 1864. He was elected Major of the Regiment 24 June 1864. He was wounded in the thigh at the Battle of Bentonville, NC on 18 March 1865, and died of his wounds in April.
