Before the Antietam Campaign: Son of Quaker missionaries, he was Principal of the China Academy, a Quaker school in his hometown at the start of the War. He raised a Company and was Captain as it became Company B of the 7th Maine Infantry. In the Antietam Campaign: He was slightly wounded in action on 17 September 1862. The remainder of the War: He was promoted to Major of the Regiment in 1863, and again wounded, at the Wilderness, VA in 1864.
