Age 19, an unmarried sailor from Phippsburg, he enlisted there as a Private in Company G, 7th Maine Infantry on 4 January 1862 and mustered on 21 January.

On the Campaign

He was reported missing in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He transferred to Company K in 1863 and was killed at Salem Heights, VA on 4 May 1863.
