Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was a student in the Class of 1862 at Bowdoin College when he enrolled as Lieutenant in Company H, 7th Maine Infantry at age 21 on 21 August 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was reported missing in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted to Captain, Company G (date not known). He was killed in action at Spotsylvania, VA on 18 May 1864.
