A Bowdoin graduate, from Bethel, he enrolled in Company I, 7th Maine Infantry as 2nd Lieutenant on 28 February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

His body was returned home and buried there on 9 October 1862.
