Before the Antietam Campaign:
Entered service as 2nd Lieutenant, Company B, 2nd Georgia Volunteer Infantry on 12 July 1861. He was elected Captain of the company on 28 April 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
After the battle he was commanding the Regiment as senior officer present, and wrote the unit's after-action report.

The remainder of the War:
He was wounded again at Chickamauga on 19 September 1863, and had a leg amputated. He was appointed Major of the Regiment 15 January 1864. He retired on disability on 23 December 1864.
