He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

Promoted Sergeant, then Sergeant-Major on 25 January 1863. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant to date from 21 December 1862, Promoted First Lieutenant 23 July 18673. Wounded again near Spottsylvania, VA 8 May 1864.
