Before the Antietam Campaign:
In the 1860 Federal census for Wayne County, he was listed as a 33 year old physician. He was commissioned Captain of Company C of the Second Regiment on 16 May 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He became senior officer and commanded the regiment at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The remainder of the War:
He resigned his commission on 8 November 1862.

After the War:
He lived in Duplin County, near Mt. Olive, North Carolina until moving to Florida (about 1878?). His wife applied for a Confederate pension in 1903 in Hamilton County, Florida.
