Before the Antietam Campaign:
Age 29, a machinist in Stoughton when commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in June 1861. Promoted First Lieutenant on 24 June 1862. He was in Company I.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action on 15 September 1862 at Harpers Ferry and paroled the same day.

The remainder of the War:
Captured in action at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863. Gave "an illegal parole and went home" and was declared a deserter. Returned and mustered out in May 1865.
