Before the Antietam Campaign: A member of the South Carolina Secession Convention, and newspaperman, he had owned the Keowee Courier since 1853.1 He was elected Captain, Company B, Second South Carolina Rifles on 31 October 1861. He was promoted to Major 6 July 1862, and Lieutenant Colonel on 3 September.2 The remainder of the War: He resigned his commission in September 1863, probably for his health, and "to serve as Commissioner in Equity of Pickens District." 2 After the War: He became a member of the bar, and continued to operate the Keowee Courier until 1898. He moved the paper and his practice to Walhalla. He was also elected to the SC General Assembly.1 | |
