Before the Antietam Campaign:
The Thirty-first regiment Georgia volunteers was organized in the fall of 1861. John T Crowder, Captain, Company D.

In the Antietam Campaign:
In command of the 31st Georgia. They were engaged late on the 16th as skirmishers in the vicinity of the East Woods, and were also among the first units engaged before dawn on the 17th. They joined in the counterattack of Hood's Division as those troops swept through the Cornfield.

LCol Crowder was wounded, and relieved by the next senior officer, Major Lowe,
