Before Sharpsburg

A 28 year old farmer in Chattahoochee County, he was commissioned Captain, Company G, 31st Georgia Infantry on 10 November 1861. He was promoted to Major on 13 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was in command of the regiment at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 after Lieutenant Colonel Crowder was hit and then succeeded to command of the Brigade after Colonel Lamar was wounded.

The rest of the War

He was wounded in action at Winchester, VA on 13 June 1863. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 19 August 1863 and Colonel of 31st Georgia in May 1864. He assumed temporary command of the brigade on March 25, 1865 until the surrender at Appomattox Court House.

After the War

He was a farmer, Georgia State Representative from Stewart County, and superintendent of schools.
