Before the Antietam Campaign:
Age 36, a tanner and currier in Marlboro when commissioned First Lieutenant, Company F of the 13th Massachusetts Infantry in July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862, while commanding Company D.

The remainder of the War:
Promoted Captain 29 November 1862, but not mustered at that rank. Resigned 3 October 1863.

After the War:
In 1866 he was elected foreman of the ìEureka Engine Co. No. 1ì of Hudson, MA.
