Before the Antietam Campaign:
Before the War he had attended Washington College, Dickinson, studied law at Lexington, Va, and was made Captain, Company K, 33rd Virginia Infantry as that unit was organized in July 1861. He was reduced to the ranks (demoted) in June 1862, and was wounded in action at Cedar Run and 2nd Manassas in August. By Sharpsburg he was again commissioned, as Lieutenant. 1

The remainder of the War:
He was wounded in action in October 1864, probably at Cedar Creek.1

After the War:
He practiced law, probably in his hometown of Woodstock.1
