Before the Antietam Campaign: He had been a carpenter and millwright in Dallas, NC before the War, and joined the 37th Regiment a 1st Lieutenant of Company H in September 1861. He was elected Captain on 1 April 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: He was in command of the regiment at Sharpsburg as senior officer present. The remainder of the War: He was promoted Major, to date from 30 July 1862, and to Lieutenant Colonel on 29 May 1863. He was wounded and captured at Gettysburg on 3 July 1863. He was imprisoned at Johnson's Island, Ohio until February 1865. After the War: He returned to Gaston County and was a carpenter and farmer and served one term in the North Carolina state legislature (1876-77).
