Before the Antietam Campaign:
By 1860 he was a very prosperous farmer in Jefferson County, Georgia.1 Captain of Company G (the "Battey Guards") at its organization on 1 October 1861, he had become commander of the Regiment at Gaines' Mill in June 1862 after all the more senior officers were killed or wounded.2

In the Antietam Campaign:
Captain Battey was killed at Sharpsburg on 17 September while in command of the Regiment.
