Before the Antietam Campaign: He enlisted at age 35 in Company C, 104th NY Infantry on 1 October 1861. Promoted Sergeant in August 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862. The remainder of the War: Promoted to First Sergeant in March 1863, briefly reduced to Private, then appointed Quartermaster Sergeant of the Regiment on 2 November 1864. He was commissioned First Lieutenant, Company E on 11 June 1865 and mustered out with the Company on 17 July 1865 near Washington, DC.
