Before the Antietam Campaign:
He entered service as 1st Lieutenant, Company H, 3rd Georgia Infantry on April 25, 1861. He was elected Captain May 18, 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
"Lieutenant Colonel Nisbet commanded the regiment in this never to be forgotten battle, and after leading his command into line, fell dangerously wounded in several places. He was left on the field of battle and fell into the hands of the enemy. Captain John F. Jones succeeded to the command of the regiment."

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted Major December 30, 1862. At Chancellorsville, Va. May 3, 1863 he was wounded in the right arm, resulting in amputation above the elbow. He was retired to the Invalid Corps August 4, 1864.
