Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted as 3rd Sergeant of Company D, 13th Georgia Infantry, date not given, and was elected 2nd Lieutenant on 22 January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded through the breast bone and in the right hand in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg. He was elected First Lieutenant to date from the battle.

The rest of the War

He was on leave through December 1862. He was ill in hospitals or on furlough from July to October 1863 and resigned his commission on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability on 27 November 1863.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he worked a large farm near Thomaston in Upson County, GA. By his death in 1889 he was paralyzed and bedridden in Upson County, GA due to his Sharpsburg wounds.

He married Achsah Matilda Holloway (1822-1859) in October 1839 and they had 8 children. He married again, Frances E. "Bettie" Caraway (1844-) in July 1867 and they had 5 more.
