Before the Antietam Campaign: A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), he was a teacher and clergyman in Alabama before the War.1 He was elected Lieutenant Colonel of the 44th Alabama Infantry on its organization in May 1862, and was promoted Colonel on the resignation of Colonel James Kent on 1 September.2 In the Antietam Campaign: Colonel Derby was killed in action at Sharpsburg. | |
