Before the Antietam Campaign: He was a merchant in New York City before the War. He enlisted in Company C, and was First Sergeant. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862. The remainder of the War: Discharged for wounds in February 1863. Transferred as 2nd Lieutenant to the 1st NC Infantry (US) on 26 February 1864. He resigned that commission on 30 July 1864.
