Daniel P. Latham

He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company E, 4th North Carolina State Troops on 16 May 1861. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 2 June 1862, and Captain on 19 June.

He was mortally wounded in action in the Bloody Lane at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

This gallant regiment, which has never been surpassed by any troops in the world for gallantry, subordination, and propriety, was commanded by the heroic Captain [William T.] Marsh, and, after his fall, by the equally heroic Captain [D. P.] Latham, who shared the same fate.

He died of wounds on 27 September 1862 at a US Army hospital near Sharpsburg, and was originally buried "In Benj. Grave's [Grove's] old orchard". Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
