Then living in Bertie County, he enlisted at age 17 in Company A, 15th North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds on 8 January 1863 in Staunton, VA.
