Age 30, he enlisted as a Private in Company C, 15th North Carolina Infantry on 2 July 1862 in in Darden County (or 15 July in Raleigh).

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was paroled on 26 September 1862 and was in US Army hospitals in Philadelphia, PA from 15 October 1862 to about 1 January 1863, when the hospital reported him as a deserter. On Company muster rolls through February 1863 he's listed as "missing in Maryland" and "taken in battle ... supposed to have taken the oath." He was dropped from the roll in April 1863, said to be a deserter in Maryland in 1862 with no later military record.
