Age 30, he enlisted as a Private in Company C, 15th North Carolina Infantry on 2 July 1862 in in Darden County (or 15 July in Raleigh).

On the Campaign

He was probably mortally wounded in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain, MD and captured there. He was also listed as wounded and/or missing at Sharpsburg in some records.

The rest of the War

He was treated at a US Army field hospital in Burkittsville, MD and died there of wounds on 7 October 1862.
