Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Harnett County, he enlisted as 2nd Corporal in May 1861 in Company F, 15th NC Infantry. He was promoted to 5th Sergeant.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on South Mountain at Crampton's Gap on 14 September 1862.
