Before the Antietam Campaign:
Enlisted as Private, Company E, in the 50th as it was first organized March 4, 1862. He was elected Lieutenant Colonel March 22, 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He is listed in command of the Regiment on the Maryland Campaign, in the apparent absence of Colonel William R. Manning.

The remainder of the War:
He was killed in action on July 2, 1863 in fighting on the Rose Farm, west of the Wheatfield at Gettysburg, PA. He was buried (see discussion) there after the battle, but his body was later returned to Georgia.
