Before Sharpsburg

A 41 year old medical doctor in King William County, he was commissioned Captain, Company H, 53rd Virginia Infantry on 26 July 1861.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 while in command of the Regiment as senior officer present. He had resigned his commission on 9 September due to age, but he remained with his Company awaiting its acceptance.

The rest of the War

His resignation was approved on 23 October 1862.
