Before the Antietam Campaign: He enrolled in Company A of the 56th Virginia Infantry in July 1861 and was elected Captain of his Company in May 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in action on South Mountain on September 14th. The remainder of the War: He was promoted to Major of the Regiment on 13 June 1864, and appointed Lieutenant Colonel on 7 December 1864. He was captured in action at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, on 31 March 1865 and imprisoned at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington DC and at Johnson's Island before being released on 15 July.
