Before the Antietam Campaign:
At age 24 he mustered in as First Lieutenant, Company D, 78th NY Infantry on 24 January 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds at Smoketown, MD in a hospital near the battlefield on 27 October 1862.
