At age 18 he enlisted at Poughkeepsie in as Private, Company A, 80th NY Infantry, mustering in on 11 March 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted Corporal (unknown date) and discharged 11 March 1865 at the end of his three-year term of service.
