Before the Antietam Campaign:
He came to America in the 1850s, and was a stonecutter in Belleville, NJ until he enlisted as Private in Company F, 13th New Jersey Infantry on 22 August 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged on disability at the Convalescent Camp, Alexandria, VA on 29 January 1863.
