Before the Antietam Campaign:
A "prominent Reidsville citizen and clerk of the Superior Court", he was elected Captain of Company B, the 'Tattnall Rangers', of the 61st Georgia Infantry on 3 August 1861, and promoted Major 31 May 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He assumed command of the Regiment when Col Lamar took over the Brigade on the17th. He was killed at the battle.
