He was 20 years old, from Coventry, when he enlisted in Company D, 14th Connecticut Infantry on 13 August 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of his wounds 14 October 1862.
