Before the Antietam Campaign: From Solon, he enlisted as Corporal 18 May 1861 in Company A, 23rd Ohio Infantry. Captain McIlrath recommended him for a commission [in a new regiment] as 2nd Lieutenant in April 1862 - Colonel Hayes endorsing - but Bull was not appointed. Local history says Corporal Bull was mortally wounded at Antietam and died afterward while a prisoner of war. His father was Lorenzo Solon Bull (1813 - 1894) - an early Ohio pioneer. His widow (m. 12 January 1862) Huldah J Dewey - a relative of Admiral George Dewey - married another Company A soldier, George Washington Jenkins in 1867. | |
