Before the Antietam Campaign:
He had been 2nd Lieutenant, Company A (the 'Creole Guards' from East Baton Rouge Parish), of the 8th Louisiana, and was appointed Major of the Regiment 7 May 1862, shortly after its April reorganization.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded at the battle.

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted Lieutenant Colonel 15 October 1862 (but may have held that rank at Sharpsburg), and Colonel of the Regiment 6 April 1863. He was killed in command at Gettysburg on 2 July, in the attack on Cemetery Hill.
