Before the Antietam Campaign:
An engineer before the War, from Jackson, Alabama, he was commissioned Captain, Company B - the Railroad Guards - of the 9th Alabama Infantry on 23 May 1861. He was promoted to Major of the Regiment in April 1862 (to rank from October 1861) while at Yorktown, Virginia.
In the Antietam Campaign:
He was senior officer present in the regiment in Maryland, and took command of the Brigade at Sharpsburg after Colonel Cumming was wounded early on 17 September. He was himself wounded in action there.
The remainder of the War:
He was in command of the regiment at Chancellorsville in May 1863. He resigned his commission sometime before September 1863.
