Before the Antietam Campaign: He was 36 years old when he enrolled on 1 May 1861, at Brockets Bridge, to serve two years. He mustered in as Captain, Company K, 34th New York Infantry on 15 June 1861. Promoted to Major on 1 July 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: He commanded the Regiment early in the Campaign while Colonel Suiter was ill. The remainder of the War: Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel 22 January 1863, and mustered out with the regiment on 30 June 1863.
