Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted 16 May 1861 in Company F, 21st Virginia Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
One of the three members of Company F on the Campaign. Present at Harpers Ferry on 15 Sepetember, but sick and not in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The remainder of the War:
Appointed Junior 2nd Lieutenant in 1863 and First Lieutenant in April 1864. Wounded and captured in action at Cedar Creek, VA on 19 October 1864, and exchanged in March 1865.
