He enlisted 21 April 1861 in Company F, 21st Virginia Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
One of the three members of Company F on the Campaign.

The remainder of the War:
Promoted 2nd Sergeant in April 1863 and First Sergeant in December 1863. Appointed Adjutant of the Regiment on 12 September 1864. Wounded in action at Winchester, VA on 19 September 1864 and disabled for further service.
