Before the Antietam Campaign:
Resident of Henry County when he enlisted in Company I, 21st Virginia Infantry on 29 June 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 18 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Captured in action in July 1864 and imprisoned at the Old Capitol Prison, then Elmira, NY.

After the War:
He died at the R.E. Lee Camp #1 Soldier's Home in Richmond.
