Before the Antietam Campaign:
In the Spring of 1861, when the Legion was formed, he was Captain of Company C, the "Georgia Troopers", one the 4 original cavalry companies making up the Battalon.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He assumed command of the Cavalry Battalion after Lt Colonel Young was wounded in a cavalry action near Burkittsville on 13 September.

The remainder of the War:
He was Major 23 May to 1 November 1862, when he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. He was wounded in action near Gettysburg, Pa, in July 1863. He was mortally wounded in action 23 September 1863.
