Before Antietam

Age 23, he enlisted on 2 July 1861 in New York City, mustered as a Private in Company I, 42nd New York Infantry on 6 July.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD on 18 September and sent on to Washington, DC on 27 September 1862.

He was wounded again, at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863, and was captured on 22 June 1864 near Petersburg, VA. He was still a prisoner when he was transferred to Company C, 82nd New York Infantry on 28 June 1864, and on to Company D, 59th New York Infantry on 10 July. He was finally paroled in March 1865 and mustered out on 7 June 1865 at Munson's Hill, VA.
