Before the Antietam Campaign: He was appointed Lieutenant on 21 Jun 1861, and was promoted to Captain upon Capt Booton's resignation in Oct 1861. The remainder of the War: His battery was disbanded on 04 Oct 1862, and he was transferred to be enrolling officer for Page County. He then entered Mosby's 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry, became Captain of Company C, and was later promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the unit.
