Before the Antietam Campaign: At Second Mannassas General Field was wounded resulting in his brigade coming under the command of Colonel John M. Brockenbrough of the 40th VA. The remainder of the War: Originally in command of the 40th Virginia regiment, he led Brockenbrough's "Virginia" Brigade for the rest of the War. After the War: He spent "several years" in Chicago, then retuned to Virginia and farmed. He was also employed in the Land Office of Virginia at Richmond.
