Carter Moore Braxton, Jr.

A 24 year old civil engineer in Fredericksburg, he enrolled there on 21 February 1861 as 2nd Lieutenant of Battery C, 38th Virginia Heavy Artillery Battalion. He was promoted First Lieutenant almost immediately. He was detailed as Assistant Chief Engineer of Virginia Troops in May 1861 and transferred to the Fredericksburg Light Artillery battery as its Captain on 8 May 1862.

He commanded the battery in Maryland.

He was appointed Major on 2 March 1863 and Lieutenant Colonel on 27 February 1864. He led a battalion of artillery and was Chief of Artillery to General A.P. Hill.

He was a civil engineer for the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Petersburg, the Chesapeake & Ohio, and other railroads. He was president of the Fredericksburg and Gordonsville Railroad and had his own engineering firm - Braxton, Chandler, and Marye in Newport News.

His grandfather Carter Braxton was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
