Before the Antietam Campaign:
He erolled on 12 August 1861 in New York City, and mustered in as Second Lieutenant, Company F, 59th New York Infantry on 12 October 1861. He was promoted to First Lieutenant, Company D on 12 June 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged 12 March 1863.

After the War:
He was commissioned (Master's) Mate, US Navy, in July 1865, and assigned to USS Tacony. He resigned in March 1866.
